Asian Civilizations Museum

Asian Civilizations Museum

Montréal, September 18, 2007

Via its collaborations with GSM Design, Lightemotion has been active in Singapore for a few years now. Lightemotion designed the light setting for several projects, among them the Asian Civilizations Museum. For this museum, which explores the various aspects of the country’s multiethnic culture, the firm carried out a series of sophisticated installations where light acts as a revelatory agent, subtly highlighting the principal elements of the collection.

At the Asian Civilizations Museum, the use of optical fibre was favoured and its integration with the architecture rigorously calculated. The main characteristic of the museum’s lighting system is its great flexibility, so that it may be easily adapted to upcoming exhibits.

Lightemotion is currently putting the final touches to the lighting for Singapore’s Army Museum as well. Spread out over two floors, this museum, designed by the Canadian firm Lord, is devoted to the country’s military history.

The Army Museum of Singapore is one of the projects where Lightemotion most closely integrated lighting ideas and techniques connected with architecture, museums and shows. The lighting artists incorporated robotized projectors, LED sources, various stroboscopic systems and several holographic projections. In addition, equipment specifically designed to install the elements for this exhibit were brought into play.

More than just a traditional exhibit, the museum will also provide a spectacular multimedia installation by stage director Casey Lim. Titled Our Army Now, the prensentation recreates the experience of a battlefield. Thanks to a giant (360-degree) circular projection screen, the visitor will be in the thick of the action, surrounded by helicopters, exploding bombs, wind, fire and tanks. Lightemotion’s contribution to this installation consisted in synchronizing the lighting on the projection screen to achieve a result in keeping with the dynamic scenes, giving the reconstruction a striking realism. The Army Museum expects to open its doors at the end of 2007.
